we must do the work of becoming

We all have thoughts going through our heads and for the longest time I thought I had no control over those thoughts. I thought the thoughts were true. I believed the negative, not beneficial, make me feel bad about myself thoughts.

But I have come to realize that our brains make up stories and fill in information in an effort to protect us that often is incorrect, untrue, and not beneficial. That is just the way our brains work. Now that I know what my brain is doing and that I can choose the thoughts, I’ve taken my power back.

My brain used to often assume the worst or fill the story in with negative information. With a lot of intentional work, and rewiring of the way I think, I have come to believe the best and look for truth as I fill in the stories in my head. I choose the thoughts, I think. I choose to ruminate on God’s Truth instead of untrue, not beneficial made-up stories. I have taken responsibility for myself, my thinking, my feelings, my actions. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I am being transformed daily by the renewing of my mind.

This is intentional work. It is daily work. We must choose every day to remind ourselves who we are in Christ and remind ourselves of His strength in us.

We must choose to practice thinking new thoughts. Choose to practice awareness around why we do what we do. Choose to practice self-compassion.

If we believe we are unlovable. If we think thoughts about being unlovable then our brain is going to look for evidence to prove our thoughts right thus making us feel more unlovable. If we believe we are unworthy. If we think thoughts about being unworthy then our brain is going to look for evidence to prove our thoughts right thus making us feel more unworthy. If we believe there is something wrong with us or that we are fundamentally flawed. If we think thoughts about being wrong or flawed, then our brains are going to look for evidence to prove that we are wrong or flawed.

We must work on our mind management. We must tell ourselves a new story. We must choose to affirm ourselves and change our self-talk to Truth.

If we believe we are lovable and worthy and exactly the way we should be, then our brains will look for evidence to prove those thoughts true and we will feel more lovable and worthy and like we are enough.

We tell ourselves, “I am good.” “I am enough.” “I am worthy of love and belonging.” “I can do hard things.” “I will keep going.”

We think, act, and believe, and we will become.

We practice believing. We practice thinking on what is true, honorable, good, hopeful, and we will see those things.

We can never eliminate all our past thinking or stop our brains from giving us unhelpful information, but we can practice awareness of what our brains do, allow the thoughts to be there without judgement and then choose to think a new thought. We feel and move through our emotions instead of trying to stop them or numb them away.

We remind ourselves daily, we are loved by The King. We are a son or daughter of God. We are filled with the Holy Spirit. We are filled with grace and power.

Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes. Romans 12:2 TPT

We must renew our mind on Truth.

So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you arePay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 TPT

We must guard our minds.

We can demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break through every arrogant attitude that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God. We capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One. 2 Corinthians 10:5 TPT

We must practice awareness of our thoughts and take captive the thoughts that don’t serve us.

For me this looks like being aware of what I am thinking. Not beating myself up for what thoughts pop into my head but paying attention to them, allowing them to be without “should of”-ing myself, then moving through them to where I want to be. I claim Truth over the lies. I tell myself, that is not how I do it anymore. I intentionally choose a different way of thinking. This takes practice.

Jesus looked at them and replied, “With people it is impossible, but not with God—God makes all things possible!” Mark 10:27 TPT

We must stop saying, “I can’t” and remember, “God can!”

It is always about who God is and what He can do in us. We choose to renew our mind on Truth and God does a transforming work in us as we Trust Him and learn to rest in His Love for us. It’s a miracle and mystery!

Keep seeking and discovering!
