Believe.

One of my favorite quotes is from the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street. In it Kris Kringle says, “If you can’t believe, if you can’t accept anything…on faith, then you are doomed to live a life dominated by doubt.”

We must practice the belief we want to believe until we believe it.

We are what we think we are. We do what we think we can do. Our brains want to prove our thoughts to be true. If we think something is hard, or impossible, then our brain is going to look for all the ways the thing is hard, and it will likely be impossible. We will prove our thoughts true. If we tell ourself that we can do this. We can do hard things. We will figure it out, make the most of this situation, then we most likely will.

We must believe that change is possible. We must believe that we are loved by God. We must believe that His Word isn’t just nice ideas for someone else but true for us. We must believe that us being the best version of ourselves is not only good for us but those around us. We must believe there is a better Way. These thoughts might not initially feel true, that is why we have to practice believing the thought until we know it deep in our souls. We practice thoughts just like we would practice and get good at anything else. No one is automatically good at something, they practice and become good at it.

I think sometimes we say we believe something, because we want it to be true, we wish it was true but we don’t actually live like it is true. Some how we have to take our head knowledge and let it sink down and become heart knowing.

In an effort to not be unbelieving I often pray Mark 9:24, “Lord, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.”

And. We have the power of the Holy Spirit inside us. He is our Helper, our Counselor. He makes the Truth known to us if we ask Him. We need to slow down, be still, pay attention and listen for His voice speaking Hope and Peace and Love into our lives.

Keep seeking and discovering!

Mark 9:24 is one of my favorite verses. I believe it is God’s way of telling us that even though he expects us to trust Him and not doubt that he knows we will still struggle and it’s ok. We just work toward having more and more faith.
