2 Steps to Help You Learn a New Way of Being

Do you ever feel like you are living that old Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day? Like every day is the same? Do you ever feel that things will always be the same?

If we change our thoughts, we change our lives!

We have trained ourselves to be the way we are with the thoughts we have thought about ourselves over time. We learned how to think and what we believe about ourselves from observations, and self-preservation, and listening, and experiences over the years. Our brains tried to help us form ways of being based on keeping us safe but often those ways no longer serve us as adults.

The thoughts we choose are often the cause of us staying stuck. The thoughts we think are often the cause of our pain. We allow our circumstances to victimize us BY OUR THINKING about what is happening in our life.

Thoughts are things. Thoughts cause emotions.

Our body becomes addicted to the emotions we create. Our emotions are like cocktails our body makes in response to our thinking.

For example, if we are used to stress and worry and drama and overwhelm, then we will stress and worry and create drama over anything (our money, our kids, our spouse, our job, etc.) to keep generating the stress emotion “cocktail” that feels comfortable to us.

Our bodies will do almost anything to get back to whatever feels normal to us.

Our brains want to make situations/circumstances a “big ol’ deal” with a lot of drama but we can choose not to. We can choose instead to be like, “oh yeah, we’ll see how it goes.”

We suffer because we think things to be different than they are, what we need to do is accept what is. We begin doing this by practicing awareness of what we are thinking. We need to begin recognizing what we are thinking and realize what that thinking is creating.

The first step to change is AWARENESS. We need to become aware of what we are thinking. Awareness helps us to realize what we need to work on to change.

We must begin by practicing awareness of what we are thinking. We begin to notice our thoughts and pay attention to them. We practice awareness of how we feel when we think those thoughts.

We ask ourselves; how would I like to feel? What emotions do I want to have? How do I want to show up in the world? How do I want to be?

Then we consider what thoughts do I need to think to create the emotions I want to feel? We can choose to replace the unhelpful, not serving us, thought our brain is offering us with a new good helpful thought.

If we keep thinking the same thoughts, we will keep recreating what we created in the past.

Practicing awareness is the first step in training our mind to think a new thought. We practice thinking a new thought and feeling a new feeling.

This takes effort, intention, and lots of practice to think and feel different.

PRACTICE is the second step to begin to live a new Way.

We have default thinking that we have trained ourselves to think. Our default thinking causes our default emotions. We will have to train ourselves to think and feel a new way! This will take time and effort as we practice thinking new thoughts and generating the feelings we want.

We must practice because it takes time to retrain our mind and body. We need to practice over and over and over again. Practice noticing unhelpful thoughts our brain is offering us and replacing those thoughts with thoughts that serve us. Practice creating the emotions we want by being intentional about our thinking. Practice patience and self-compassion as we are in the process of becoming.

We help ourselves unlearn old ways and learn a new Way.

We take total responsibility for our life. We decide to be intentional about what we are creating for ourselves. We are aware of our thoughts, and we practice thinking thoughts that generate the feelings we want to have to motivate us to take actions that give us the life we want!

It is possible! And totally worth the effort!

Keep seeking and discovering!
